Difference between HIV and AIDS

The HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a retrovirus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), a condition in humans that result in the progressive failure of the immune system, thereby increasing the susceptibility of the human body to contract fatal illnesses.
There are two types/strains of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Difference between HIV-1 and HIV-2

HIV-1 transcends globally as it is highly virulent and infectious. This is the virus that is commonly associated with HIV infections in the developed world where big pharmaceutical companies operate.

HIV-2 tends to be less virulent and infectious. Hence, fewer of those exposed to HIV-2 will be infected and this is the primary reason that HIV-2 is largely confined to West Africa.
